- This year's World Health Assembly, the annual gathering of all World Health Organization (WHO) member states, marked historic moments. After two years of intense negotiations, the member countries agreed on a comprehensive package of revisions to strengthen the International Health Regulations (IHR). These regulations, established nearly 20 years ago to manage global health crises, needed reinforcement due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides, the members committed to finalizing a global pandemic agreement within a year, potentially as early as 2024. Read more.
- The White House has launched a new initiative with Microsoft and Google to enhance cybersecurity resilience for rural hospitals. It will provide free and low-cost tools and services to independent critical access and emergency hospitals. Google will offer free endpoint security advice and funding for software migration, while Microsoft will provide grants and up to 75% discounts on security products. This effort addresses the vulnerability of rural hospitals to cyberattacks, aiming to ensure the safety and continuity of care for the over 60 million patients these hospitals serve. Read more.
- India's Armed Forces Medical Services is enhancing its digital capabilities to address health challenges for soldiers and their families. They have partnered with Indian Institutes of Technology to develop AI models for diagnosis and medical devices for remote care. They are also exploring robotics, nanotechnology and drone-based patient transport. The Armed Forces Medical College in Pune has become the pilot site for a telehealth program offering 24/7 mental health services. This initiative is part of the Indian Army's commitment to modernization, with 2024 declared the ‘year of technology absorption.’ Read more.
- The WHO European Region has released the second edition of its 'Support Tool to Strengthen Health Information Systems' report, now featuring four new modules. It includes insights from 20 hospital information systems (HIS) assessments conducted since 2015, aiming to enhance national HIS capabilities and address urgent needs following the Covid-19 pandemic. The updated tool comprises two main components: comprehensive guidance for HIS assessments and strategies for HIS development. It improves the assessment methodology for the core module while introducing four new add-on modules: Emergency Response Information Management System, Geographic Information System, Long-Term Care and Migration Health Data. - The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its campaign against counterfeit and substandard medicines in Nigeria through legal actions. Recently, three individuals and Giddyson Healthcare Limited were arraigned in the Federal High Court, Kano, on charges of manufacturing, selling, and distributing counterfeit medicines. These falsified medications pose serious health risks. NAFDAC emphasized its uncompromising stance against substandard medicines, urging public cooperation to report suspicious activities and highlighting the importance of technology in detecting such issues.
